Gem-quality red beryl was discovered in 1958, in the Wah Wah Mountains (Beaver County / Utah / USA) by Lamar Hodges. In 1967, Hodges sold his mining right to the Harris family. They started a small-scale, open-cut mining until 1994. They produced a small but steady supply of red beryl. In 1971, GIA identified the red crystals as red beryl. In 1994, KEC (Kennecott Exploration Co.) started its activities at the mine. In 1996, KEC and Kennecott Mineral Company (KMC) was aquisited by by "Rio Tinto Zinc" (London / UK). In 1997, an agreement was reached between KEC, Amelia Investments Ltd, the Harris family, and Red Emerald Inc.. Amelia Investments Ltd established GMI (Gemstone Mining Inc.). Complicated relations re owners, options, and mining rights in the following years. In 1999, GMI looked for a new trading name for red beryl. They prefer the name "red emerald". In 2000, Red Emerald, Ltd. cut a 2.84 ct stone. |
